How to Choose Your First Embroidery Kit
What’s included in a good beginner embroidery kit?
A quality beginner embroidery kit should include everything you need to get started without any extra trips to the craft shop. Look for kits that contain:
- Pre-printed or pre-marked fabric - so you can follow the design without having to transfer a pattern yourself
- DMC embroidery threads - the gold standard for quality and colour consistency
- An embroidery needle - sized correctly for the fabric included
- An embroidery hoop - to keep your fabric taut while you stitch (some kits include one, others don’t - always check!)
- Clear step-by-step instructions - ideally with a stitch guide for beginners
At Your Creative Side, all of our beginner embroidery kits are carefully chosen to include everything you need, with clear instructions so you can start stitching straight away.
What stitches will I need to learn?
Don’t be put off by the idea of learning embroidery stitches - most beginner kits only use a handful of simple ones. The most common are:
- Running stitch - the simplest of all, great for outlines
- Back stitch - creates a solid line, perfect for lettering and outlines
- Satin stitch - fills in shapes with smooth, parallel stitches
- French knot - adds texture and detail and looks tricky, but is very satisfying once you get the hang of it!
Many of our kits include a stitch guide so you can refer back to it as you go. Our EmBeaRoidery beginner kits even include a dedicated booklet with step-by-step photographs for each stitch.
Should I choose a kit with or without a hoop?
This depends on whether you want to display your finished piece. Embroidery hoops make beautiful wall decorations - the finished work stays in the hoop and can be hung straight away. If you’d like a ready-to-display piece, look for kits that include a hoop.
If you’d prefer to frame your work or use it in another project, a kit without a hoop is fine you can always pick up a 4” or 6” beech wood hoop separately from our accessories range.
What size kit should I start with?
For a first project, smaller is better. A design that fits into a 6” hoop is ideal - it is achievable in a few evenings and gives you a real sense of accomplishment when it’s finished. Once you’ve completed one or two smaller pieces, you’ll have the confidence to tackle larger, more detailed designs.
